SSL, redirects and SEO

I’d like to install the SSL that I bought.

The guy at the hosting company told me he can write a redirect on the htaccess file. But Google says it’s not very good for SEO to redirect. So I don’t know what to do.

Here’s what the guy said:

Would you like the ‘www’ prefix in the SSL fr those domains? Of you you use the websites without the www? There is conflicting information on the redirect…According to Google, that’s how it should be done. However, they flag that it’s redirected when looking in webmaster tools. So you take your chances with that…you can either implement https and tell google about it and don’t redirect and then hope that they serve those links, or force it with a redirect. They are now using the fact of wheth it’s using https as a positive ranking factor so it’s all worth while.

Should I use a 301 redirect? I belive that’s the same thing that big sites use for privacy.

I’d like to listen to your views on this.

Thanks.
