you could make a ton of money…
or does that even exist already?

That one is possible but impractical. The thing is, a social network would be quite complex so that a single software would not be able to handle it.
Still need to do design there are many social network scripts out there to use though.

I love how so much of the public wants to make social networking site without putting time, money or effort into it. Are people so spoiled by the web’s ease of use they really think we just point and click our way to create such a site? If they had any idea just how much time, money and programming it takes…

I just that “Let Me Google That For You” service all the time… 
It seems the easier information is to obtain the less people look for it…
Much less market research and the plan of providing a service a group of people would find useful.
It is just my opinion the the “build it and they will come” days are over. Smoke, mirrors and shiny objects no longer captivate the masses… People are looking for real services to save them time and money. That is just my opinion as i am sure there is a segment out there still captivated by shiny objects.

There are a couple of good ones. I created one for our local Nanaimo Astronomy Society in Ning.
Another one is Buddy Press for creating social networks in Wordpress. I haven’t tried that one, but I have heard good things about it.
