So building a website

Making it out of flash… shocker…

Need some help with stuff… The only issues I will have with this website is putting in 2 things that I would have to continually reload the SWF with changes if I dont find a way to input them directly into the website…

  1. Is a News page… if I could find a way to host an image that could function as the news page with a scroll bar that would be great because I could just change the image with the same address and update as I go.

  2. A calendar. Now the calender on the current HTML page I think is also imported as well, same thing with a google map link that links the image of the map for directions to the webpage…

What can I do? Im not new to flash just coming back… gotta actually find scripts again for buttons and hyperlinks… lol feelin like a noob.

I would start with w3schools - their interactive tutorials on HTML, CSS, and Javascript are free. Personally, I would not spend time on HTML5 just yet as it requires certain javascript hacks to work in older browsers.

After you’re through with that, you might sign up for a Sitepoint course such as Russ Weakley’s CSS Live, next time he does it.

No need to spend a fortune on tools when you use pure HTML/CSS (which is more than I can say for Flash! ) - all you need is:

  1. A good editor. I recommend jedit or [url=http://www.pspad.com]PSPad. If you want more of a full-blown IDE, try [url=http://www.netbeans.org]Netbeans.
  2. A copy of every major web browser version: Opera 10.63, Chrome, Firefox 3.6, and IE8. You will also need IE7 and, unfortunately, 6. You can’t install all of these together, but there are tools to simulate the effect. I use IETester. Buggy, but it works.
  3. The Firebug addon for Firefox, Dragonfly in Opera, or Chrome Developer Tools all do pretty much the same thing - allow you to analyze the structure and effect of your HTML/CSS visually - and are indispensable tools in any web developer’s arsenal.
  4. If you’re planning to develop with a Content Management system such as MODx or [url=http://www.joomla.org]Joomla, you will need a local webserver such as [url=www.wampserver.com/en/]WAMP (or MAMP for Mac).
  5. It’s now possible to have Flash-like effects easily implemented without the disadvantages of Flash using jQuery, a well-documented javascript library with many useful plugins. High-profile users include Google, which also hosts the library on their CDN.

All of the tools I have mentioned are free, and there are many more free tools where these came from.

All you need to add is some study time and enterprise, and you will soon be able to develop lightweight, SEO-friendly sites that work on mobile devices as well as desktop browsers.

Flash? Who needs it? (:

What’s wrong with html? If you want to be on the cutting edge just make use of HTML5 and CSS3.

Alright well give me an alternative then… something I can get ahold of without spending a fortune… I mean **** worse comes to worse I can always do it in HTML… but I dunnn wannna

Hrm… can u link me to a good tutorial… my html is a bit rusty and I wanna get back up to speed on that bizzitch

Are you pretty much set on Flash? :frowning: Have you considered the deleterious effect it can have on SEO, bandwidth, and mobile devices such as the iPad?

Just thought I would be the one to give the requisite warning about Flash sites.

Don’t know much about Flash but I’d be surprised if there is a way to do this, unless you create a dynamic Flash application and store all the content in a database.

Which is another reason to choose HTML/CSS/Javascript instead of Flash

You may want to check out wordpress, there’s a lot of free themes that would be ideal for a news-type frontpage and a calendar sidebar widget is very common in the free themes. However, to modify the themes it you would need some light php knowledge as well as the usual css/html. I really love wordpress’ CMS- very user friendly.

Ugh… ur probably right… I love Flash tho… huggies

Wow that sounded so akward…

I have to agree with kenquad here. I probably step quite some people on their tows, but I left Flash behind me long time ago. And, though I liked it at the time while working with it, I’m happy I made that decision. For me Flash is history. There are many other ways to accomplish what you want.

Might want to hire a web developer good idea to get started. Or search in Google for a free flash calendar but to match your complete site I would suggest hiring on a part time worker.
