Setting up a network printer

I’m trying to setup a network printer at a friend’s office and I was able to find some good resources online to tell me what to do. But I’m having issues determining if the printer on the network is functioning as intended. I followed some command line instructions from step 4 on here: http://www.findmyip.org/find-network-printer-ip.php

I also checked with the router which is a Netopia that was not picking up the printer on the DHCP table. Any advice on what I could do?

It was purchased as a refurbished item.

Printer: Sharp AR-168D

Network Device: AR-NB2N

What does the LED on the router indicate? Is the printer connected according to the router?

Did you use the right kind of cable, i.e., straight instead of cross-over?
Newer printers auto-detect what kind of cable is used, but older printers might have a problem with cross-over.

For more info on straight / cross-over click here.

It is connected directly to the router and a light on the router is illuminated to signify so.

It’s hooked up using a crossover cable, I didn’t realize it made a difference for printers.

Try a straight cable

Cross-over cables are to directly connect one PC to another. When you use a hub or switch you always need straigt cables.
Except for some new hardware that will auto-sense what kind of cable is used and work with both.
