Session_id definitions

I had read some articles in web but i have this question:

The session_id creates a unique id integer number when someone gets in a page that we set session_start() function? And this unique id remains in server in a time that we can set?

which problems did you encounter getting this information from the documentation?

I am thinking to use it getting the unregistered visitors and count them.
