How do I select the entire active layer in Photoshop, but no more than the shape of the layer?

hold Ctrl and then click on the picture box in the layer

Thanks for the reply. That part I knew, but I meant so that I get the dotted line around the whole visible object in the active layer.

What Norebbo said. Ctrl+click on the layer thumb image. NOT the layer name.
