I have a client who is trying to stream HD videos to his clients through his website. They pay to see these videos and he wants to make sure that they are not leaked or open to the public.
YouTube ticks every box except privacy with a hidden video. Unfortunately these can leak to the public just by sharing the link. A private video won’t work with dynamic subscriptions from his clients; being required to manually add and remove them across all videos is unworkable.
Currently what seems to be the best option for our requirements is Screencast (dot com), which offers several privacy options and even integration with Camtasia studio, which is the video editing software used by my client. There is one problem however, both the free and paid version of this service have a very low bandwidth cap for HD videos.
So what are the alternatives? We need a site that can stream HD video at a low price (ideally free), without restrictive bandwidth caps. It must also have the option to limit the viewership of the video to a specific URL or password protect it to meet our privacy requirements.
With YouTube as a precedent (HD streaming for free), restricting access to the video only saves bandwidth and limits our use of the service. So in real terms we’re looking for less than what is already out there. I don’t see that as unreasonable.
Youtube makes money by allowing as wide access as possible to increase their advertising revenue. Their terms and conditions specifically state that you won’t:
‘enforce limitations on use of the Service or the content accessible via the Service’
and
‘you agree not to use the Service (including the YouTube Player) for any of the following commercial uses unless you obtain YouTube’s prior written approval: the sale of access to the Service’
and also
‘you agree not to access Content or any reason other than your personal, non-commercial use solely as intended through and permitted by the normal functionality of the Service’
Whether you see this as not unreasonable doesn’t matter, Youtube does see it as unreasonable.
