Search Result Questions

These may be stupid questions but here goes…For the sake of useability, whey doesn’t Google:

  1. Number their search results
  2. Provide paging at the top of their search engine results

Completely non-scientific answers below…

Why would they?

A) Different users see different results so you wouldn’t want a user saying search for “Purple monkeys” there’s an awesome site ranked number 5.
B) Numbering really, in my mind, displays a clear ranking preference, e.g. #1 is significantly better than #2, which is significantly better than #3 and so on. The difference in ranking for SERPs can be extremely miniscule.

  1. Provide paging at the top of their search engine results

Because Google wants you to look at all the results on the first page before going on to the second page? How would you know that what you want isn’t on the first page if you don’t read it all/scroll below the fold? By putting pagination at the bottom, it forces you to do that.

That makese sense. I guess my annoyance stems from the fact that I sometimes look up my ranking for different keywords, am forced to use a page size of 100, and usually am toward the end. This makes it a pain to figure out exactly where I am in the results.

I’ve found that many of the sites that allow you to determine your ranking based on your url and different keywords usually aren’t accurate. And if what you say about different people seeing different results is true, I don’t see how they can be a reliable source at all.

Yeah that is the obvious answer but what does Google get out of forcing someone to look through all of the results? I guess maybe it is a way of rewarding the best pages to ensure that they continue to provide worthwhile content?

Sometimes I like to just scan through pages of results, just to get an idea of what is out there. As long as I can see the top 7-8 results I really don’t want to have to scroll to to the bottom in order to pull up the next page. I guess you can’t have it all.

Thanks for the answers through and I can see the logic.

nice point tke71709. very well said. those questions pops up on my mind sometimes if i’m a little irritated on the rankings.
