Screen resolution checker

Hi all

I saw something a while back that allowed you to check a website against specific screen resolutions.

I though I would try and produce something similar as a way of trying to get to grips with JQuery. Could also use it with clients to get my points over about choosing the correct screen resolution.

It still needs some work/polishing but I think it is ready to show and get some feedback on. Hope you like it.

<snip/>
I hope to build on it over the coming weeks/months.

I’m unclear what you want to do?

Do you want to show clients how their current sites look in various screen resolutions?

To do that I’d get a nice square monitor with the ability to go very high, and just change settings.

If you want to measure actual visitors’ screen rezzes then I think you’re going in the wrong direction. First of all, I doesn’t haz teh JS, so what would it measure for me? Second, there’s the issue with the power users with ginormous screens… I seem to be in the minority by allowing my browser full width, as in other threads around here at SitePoint, people seem to say they like minimising their browsers so their other apps can be onscreen— one of the main reasons they chose a large screen (whereas I chose my large screen for testing reasons only).

When building my sites I use a quickie plugin for Firefox that will resize my browser to any of several “standard” (popularly used) sizes. Then I can see very quickly what happens at various sizes, which as far as I’m concerned is good for either actual resolutions OR people who simply resize their browser.

But I may be missing what exactly you want to do! : )

Hi,

If you want feedback on your venture then you should post in the Review section of the forums where you can get elements or your whole site reviewed once you have fulfilled the criteria in that forum (i.e. review 3 other sites first).

These forums are for general problems and bug hunting or asking more generic questions about projects rather than asking for feedback which comes across as self-promotion.

I have removed the link in your post so the discussion can continue but for feedback on your actual project you would need to visit the review section.

Thank You

Hi Stomme poes

Yes I think you missed the point here.

It was set up for a number of reasons,
1 - to learn JQuery
2 - to help me (and other) explain to a client about browser sizes and what resolutions their competitors may be adhering to.
3 - a bit of fun

Using this tool the hope is it can be used from anywhere. I tend to meet most of my cleints out of the office, I use their machines at their offices.

They will not have firefox installed. They may not have the big monitor.

Its something that can if desired to be used to engage them to make a particular point about browsers resolutions. Thats all.

Ah, okay. So a sort of tool you access with the client’s computer… you use that site to view the Client’s site in, you mean?? Kinda like what Vischeck does for colour-blindness?

That sounds kinda cool.
