Running and Shin Splints

I know there are a few runners on the forums here and was wondering if any had ever gotten shin splints and how they dealt with them?

I got them last August training for a Biathlon (I was doing interval training). I’ve had a heck of a time getting over them and basically quit running through November and December. Recently, I bought some compression sleeves for my shins which allow me to run a mile or so without pain (about once a week) but they get sore later that day.

6 months seems like a long time for these. And no, I haven’t seen a doctor. My youngest got them a couple of years back while on the school track team and the doc just said don’t run for awhile. So I decided to keep my money and wait it out. And like I said, they are getting better, it’s just been a lot longer road than I had expected.

I’m itching to get back out and get some training in as there are some trail runs I want to do this spring and summer. So, what did you guys do?

I suffer badly with them and so dont run much (read that as at all!) but the fast approaching 40 has prompted me to give it another go!
I used to get them when fencing due to the immense impact pressure going through the heel of the landing front foot - the solution was a small moulded piece of plastic that went on my heel.
That took all the impact out and stopped the pain almost immediately.

It was at that point I injured my elbow and had to quit :frowning:

I dont know if it would work for running but will let you know tomorrow!

oh yeah, i have a heel cup also. that works for others, didn’t much for me. i do mostly trail running and i think i’m on the balls of my feet more than if i was running streets/sidewalks.

fencing always sounded interesting to me. not much options for it around here growing up. how long had you done it?

I suppose with trail running its more balance than street running.

I fenced competitively for about 25 years making the GB squad a few times and 6 times North West (England) Sabre Champion. I would like to get back into it at somepoint but that would either require surgery or MAJOR strapping on my elbow.

I used to have horrible shin splints from playing Ultimate Frisbee but I got a good pair of inserts and never had problems again.

The ones I use are Superfeet http://www.superfeet.com/. Off the shelf, no customizing, just throw them out and put new ones in when they wear down.
