Soon my business partner and I will be releasing a site that aims to teach people music / how to play an instrument. Obviously teaching people to play popular songs would be a good addition to the site but I’m unsure as to whether or not there would be any legal issues with this.
I know that we would not be able to play the original version of the song (as in an actual recording of the song) but would we be able to provide the steps to play the song? Could we have a video of us playing the song?
How could you provide keystrokes without providing the notes? And if you could, would that be teaching in an appropriate way? If you want to teach public domain, teach the classics. Bach, Beethovan, Brahms et al. Just be sure that the arrangement you use isn’t copyright by someone else.
Would we be able to provide tutorials on how to play these songs, ie just providing key strokes etc? If not I suppose we could find some public domain songs.
