I currently have a virtual dedicated with eApps and love them but I’ve finally outgrown their offering. I have a client on MediaTemple (shared) and I really like their level of service and the custom control panel. Have any of you had exceptionally good or bad experiences with MediaTemple?
If I don’t go with MediaTemple then I’ll be looking at moving to the Rackspace Cloud. The cloud hosting is a bit more expensive but the flexibility seems to be worth it.
JeffWalden, I use mediaTemple and unfortunately I can’t say they’ve been much good lately. While their control panel is second to none (IMO) and they have a lot of features, unlike most hosts, you have to pay extra for ruby / python containers ($20 a month extra). The thing which has stopped me recommending them though is due to last year they suffered almost a week of downtime (I was affected by approx 2 days of no access to my website - one of the lucky ones) and recently there was a security breach due to them hosting passwords in plaintext format (someone discovered and then started hacking index.php files on loads of peoples accounts - mine included). Their technical support speed isn’t much good either, it takes around 2 days for a response. Sorry for the lack of good news there but things just haven’t gone well for me lately. I used to be among their biggest fans but things are pretty sour now.
Thanks for the honest reviews guys. I’m still undecided but I have decided it’s not time to make the move for all my sites yet. I’ll probably stick it out with eApps and continue to upgrade my virtual dedicated server until I need to make the jump to Rackspace cloud.
I’m especially sorry to hear about your experience, Alex, with MediaTemple. I remember that email about changing passwords (well, two of them in the last 6 months) but wasn’t sure what prompted it. Seems pretty careless to be storing passwords in plain text.
Moreover you will be able to find out more reviews on the web sites like webhostingstuff and hostjury.
Good luck.
