Now that Facebook pages requires SSL I’ve got to find a new host for a number of websites. Not too many, thankfully.
At the moment I am witkh MediaTemple (gs) which is good value for money, but I can only apply one SSL to my primary domain. Their other hosting products don’t quite work out either.
So I’m looking for a reseller hosting account that would allow me to associate a SSL certificate to each domain.
Ideally one that is quite generous with space and bandwidth, doesn’t cost the earth, hosted in Australia and has a track record of good customer service.
Cheaper? Probably so. But faster, just because they’re US based? If his audience is AU based, then a server down there is going to optimize the experience of his visitors.
He never stated that his visitors are heavily based in Australia so I am going to go ahead and recommend a US host as well. The price difference can actually allow an upgrade to VPS reseller instead for faster speeds which could be very well a good trade-off.
There is cheap SSL but in order to install to each domain name, you must have 1 hosting plan to each domain name. SSL needs dedicated IP. This might cost you at least $100/year for each domain+hosting plan+SSL.
I just did a SSL with HostGator (Texas) for $50 for the year, included all the instal fees and whatnot. There are ways to do it cheaper or even free but it is a huge headache. For Facebook you only need ONE domain to have a SSL certificate on. You then submit that domain to your Facebook app and your set to create as many pages wit that app as you wish.
Interestingly, API call from a Facebook Page slows things down, so I’m wondering whether the ideal set up is one that is not far from where a Facebook data centre is located, rather than Australia based.
If I go for a US based provider I could, potentially, bundle in Cloud Flare (or something along those lines) to try and speed things up. That said, I’m not sure whether including CloudFlare will interfere with SSL.
