Pull-outs, Call-to-action and web design

I’ve been looking around a call-outs and their usage on the web. I’m putting together some new ‘Services’ pages and there’s both reviews and case studies to link to.

While call-outs have been done online for a long time, the last few years they’ve gone back to being either entirely in the content column, or entirely outside, like http://patterntap.com/pattern/story-sports-illustrated. I am curious if this is for technical reasons (grid layouts, easier to do), or because it’s more usable/converts better?

I am considering semi-indented like http://www.smashingmagazine.com/images/creative-columns/design_view.jpg

It works well for quotes, but I cannot find any examples of doing it for case studies/other calls to actions. Only lists of related items at the footer of the page.

What great examples have you seen?
