Providing reciprocal links?

I own a website firm, and was wondering - will providing reciprocal links to an unlinked page under your domain hurt anything?

No, but it’s most likely not going to help very much unless the pages are relevant to each other. Even then, it’s from your own domain so it won’t carry much weight.

However, it will get those unlinked pages crawled/indexed unless you’ve restricted them with your robots.txt file.

Is there a way to restrict in .htaccess instead?

Lisa - yes, it’s possible but it’s a bit more difficult as you would have to identify the robots by IP address. Googlebot probably only uses a finite set of IP addresses but it’s still dicey.

You’re best bet is to use robots.txt.

Here’s a little reading on using .htaccess: http://www.kavoir.com/2009/01/htaccess-deny-from-all-restrict-directory-access.html

If you do it excessively it will hurt. But with a few links, I wouldn’t worry about it. The above poster has a good suggestion.

Hyperbolik is right most likely not going to help very much unless the pages are relevant to each other.
