I know a few very well considered and reputable programmers (some of them where required within every single corner of the world by big companies because of their expertise) which also where fantastic instrument players (one played the guitar, another the piano and someone else the saxo).
Therefore, I think that i have prove to say that you can be a good programmer and a good player.
