Professional Advice

Hi,

I’m a student that is looking to freelance in web design/dev. I am studying development and feel I can pick a lot of the design aspect from books and my experience.

Is it possible to do both successfully?:confused:

Can anyone suggest a great resource and/or link for;

Some kind of process that web design firms might follow for example meet , design, develop, launch, maintenance.

The more detail the better (inclusive of contract signoffs etc):goof::smiley:

No way any single forum can answer this completely for you. You need to first decide where your level of knowledge is (do you know what an HTML tag is? can you write your own stylesheet or JS script? etc etc all the way up the ladder) and where you want to go with it. Then you start reading. SP is a good place to start. So is Six Revisions and a large number of other design blogs and sites. The SP library has a wealth of books that will help you, as will SP veteran Alex Dawson’s “Getting Started Building Websites” and other books. And there are a ton of resources out there to get you started in learning the ropes of working with a design firm.

It is definitely possible to become both a designer and developer, but you won’t do it all at once. You need to decide what you intend to do with it, say, five years down the road. Mobile app developer? Web page designer? CMS builder? UX or accessibility expert? You have a lot of thinking to do!
