Problem With File Permissions and edit/saving in Coda and TextMate

Hello,

I am new to Mac, Coda, TextMate, FileZilla. I’m testing them out partly because I want to move away from Dreamweaver.

Straight away I have a problem. I have set up a development environment on my macbook Air using MAMP and no matter what I do, I can’t edit and save a downloaded file from any of my sites but it’s Coda that has tipped me off to the problem (I think). The image below shows the warning which includes, “…Please make sure you have write permissions.”

I don’t know what to do about that. It is the same if I do it with TextMate and Coda and if I go to one of those editors from within FileZilla.

Thanks

Hi martcol,

Could you say a bit more about this comment:

I’m not sure what you are saying there.

Are all the files on your Mac in MAMP? Or are you pulling them from somewhere else? Just clearify how you are working in as much detail as possible.

I’m guessing here, but it looks as if the file may have downloaded with the permissions set for the server. (As far as possible, I set all my file permissions on the server to 404 to try to prevent them being overwritten, then I find I can’t upload a new version of the page because I’ve forgotten to change the permissions first. ) I know very little about Macs, so I’m not sure how to change the file permissions, if that’s the case.

Alternatively, you may be trying to edit the file on the server, rather than a downloaded version, and again you would need to change the file permissions first to allow you to do that.

I think that is the problem. When I used Dreamweaver, it takes care of all that stuff and I have never really had to think about it. Oh of course, I have changed file permissions before when following security practices on my Wordpress sites, but I mean it has never been a problem like this before.

I think the mac has a security feature that is similar to the Windows thing that is designed to prevent bad things happening. I guess it thinks that my downloaded files somehow don’t belong to me so it won’t let me save them. I have done some stuff that seems to have sorted it though but, I am not sure what!

Anyway, for now it is OK and I guess I’ll just have to take some time to work out my mac.

Thanks

Martin
