Pop up for first time visitors what's the rules there

I’m thinking of making a popup or a single page on it’s own with an adsense ad pop up for first time visitors to the website.

What are big G’s rules on that type of thing?

From my understanding, they are against it. But if you ask them directly and get a useful/understandable answer, I’d be glad if you could post it here.

If I remeber correctly Google require all their ads to be a part of a web page. Having them pop up separately is not allowed.

@felgall

yeah I ditched the popup idea. It will be like ads that you see on IGN.com or SourceForge.net

First Time users usally see a blank screen with only an ad with a “skip this ad” option. DeviantArt.com shows a “blank page ad” every so often to non-logged in users.

That’s called an interstitial ad. Google don’t offer that type of advertising so if you want that you have to get the ads elsewhere.
