Point GoDaddy Domain to Virtual Dedicated Server (Plesk)

My domain name hairlossmall.com is currently pointing to a server which is really slow. I want to point it to my new virtual dedicated server, and I’ve followed directions but its not working and would love some help and a chance to learn.

Can you look at my settings?

First I started with my new virtual dedicated server that I want to point my domain to and highlighted in red here are the two “A” records I added, and also above it are two “NS” records I added above it. Does this look correct? This was done yesterday.

Now back at my domain settings I need to (1) change the name servers to point to NS1.HAIRLOSSMALL.com and NS2.HAIRLOSSMALL.com but when I do this I get this message saying that the Nameserver isnt registered. But I did this 24 hours ago in the image above. (2) is this “A” record correct? this IP Address is my old server should I change it to my new virtual dedicated server IP address?, (3) I’ve added two host summary records for “NS1” and “NS2” and [URL=“http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab4/m1a1911/4.jpg”]here is what they look like.

Over the past few years I could never figure this out, and I feel like I am really close. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

rc,

Nice explanation and images but let me explain how I’d do that:

  1. Ensure that I have the domain setup (cloned) on the new server. I’d test it using the new server’s IP address before making any redirections to the new host.

  2. Record the DNS information for your new server. I use private DNS servers associated with my account but I’d not be able to use them at both websites (hosts). You’ll okay using the DNS information provided by the new host.

  3. Log into your account at the REGISTRAR where you have hairlossmall.com registered and change the DNS servers to the new host’s DNS servers.

  4. DONE. As soon as the DNS update is propagated (from minutes to as much as three days), your new site will be live.

I’d recommend no major changes during the propagation period, though, as you don’t want the same link serving different information to different visitors. Wait until after the three day period then do whatever you need to do on the new server (and you’re safe if you want to remove the domain from the old server).

The difference: You do not need to do ANYTHING at the old server. It’s all done via your registrar and the pointers it maintains for your domain name.

Regards,

DK
