Point at domain i don't own?

normally i buy a domain from my host and the sit links easily. Slightly more difficult was transfering a domain from another developer.

I have a client who bought himself a domain name. how do i point to this from my site directory on my host?

thanks in advance.

The domain needs to be set to use the nameservers of the hosting.

Thanks for such a prompt reply, felgall.

So all I have to do is get the p/w &c from the client and go from there?

You have to get the NS names from webhost, URL of domain registrar (domain management console), login ID and password to domain management console.

Good luck

Thanks, MyDomAinZ.us. I might well need it, especially when I have to explain this to someone whose first language isn’t english.

Just tell your customer which nameservesr should he use. Let him change that himself.
That is 2 minute job

OK I’ve requested and received nameservers from my host. I’ve changed them where the domain name is and am waiting for the necessary 24 - 48.

…and something just struck me. As you might have gathered the intricacies of hosting are a bit hazy for me so forgive this, please.

Poking around my host I realised that only my root seems to have nameservers and my sites are directories under this. Have I unnecessarily asked for new ones for this domain name? Should I use the same nameservers as all the rest under my root because that’s where the site folder is?

Thanks for any feedback.
M

I eventually found that the others have there own nameservers. I still don’t understand how that connects to the directory on my root even though i have added the domain and it is related to the correct folder. Is that all I have to do?

Thanks mydomainz, I’m going to wait another 24hrs and see if it’s some kind of glitch. I’ve got the nameservers and changed them on the other place. We’ll see what happens.

Nameservers are for all web hosting customers of current web hosting provider and you share them with other. Do not worry about that at all.

Each NS has its own IP. This IP is shared by all accounts in shared hosting. If you know the IPs of nameservers, you can also create and use your own nameservers; e.g. ns1.yourdomainname.tld and ns2.yourdomainname.tld

Ask your host IPs of ns1 and ns2
Go to domain management control panel, ‘manage domain’, click your domain and visit ‘child nameserver records’ or something like that in the options. Here you can ctreate the NS records for your domain. Then change the NS records of your domain.

Actually NS are not shared, IPs are shared in the shared hosting.

All the best
Regards,

Your domain is online

I still get ‘server not found’ error page.

Try without www

Oh, that’s interesting. Why no www?

and there’s no css or images. presumably i need to change the filepaths.

Better check with GoDaddy

Instead uploading your website in public_html or directory assigned by GoDaddy, you created your own directory and uploaded the pages or so…

Good luck.

Thanks mydomainz.
