7 is now 15 years old and was for Windows 98, 98SE, and ME
CS6 is 5 years old and was for Windows XP
IMHO either would be a poor choice.

and download the trial version to see for yourself if it meets your needs.

You certainly want to not download the program from anyplace other than Adobe. Downloading from anyplace else will expose you at best to an unsupported version, at worse adware or malware.
In that case the trial version downloaded from Apache will be safe and good enough for you to be able to do that without needing to purchase it.

In this country you can only buy the CC version now. Anything else carries a risk; you could be lucky and find some old stock somewhere.
It seems a lot to pay just to remove backgrounds. I have not used Gimp for a few years but that had a background removal tool or they may have called it a foreground extraction tool and it is free.
Thus free online and downloadable graphics tool has eraser and lassoo commands which are worth trying:
Of course there is also Photoshop elements.
