How come there are thin lines going around the whole border, and can they be removed?
It looks like parts of the background are forming a border around the red border.
Can that be fixed?

One is an image of it zoomed in on the border, and the other is not zoomed in.

I don’t see anything apart from the 3px red border in your fiddle and in your screenshot. My eyes aren’t good enough to see anything different in your zoomed screenshot either.
Do you see anything strange if you remove the 3px red border? If not then what you are seeing is the border.
I’m not prepared to go around chasing shadows and your eyes are obviously better than mine so you can debug this one yourself
