I am trying to promote new gaming site snip. But since Google changed the rules a lot, what would you suggest - would it be better to promote individual inner categories or to promote a brand (home page) and let Google decide what should go to the first page? What do you do these days?

It would really depend on what your goals are. A lot of links get build to home pages naturally but building links to inner pages is also important. You should think about the context of links you are building as well. For instance if you get a link in a guest blog post to your site, the link should lead to a relevant page on your site in terms of the content within which it is placed.
