just switched to a new isp (virginmedia – uk). i had a separate email address, a non isp related one, the one i was using before. i’ll call that x@x.com. usually setting up the use of a previous non-isp related email isn’t a problem. you leave the incoming settings as are (that relate to x@x.com), and you set the outgoing according to the details provided by the isp.
i’ve done that (and messages are sent and received basically ok) but the sent emails, as received by the receiver, are getting labelled from the email address associated with the new isp account, xxx@virginmedia.com, not x@x.com. so when someone replies they’re sending their reply to xxx@virginmedia.com not not x@x.com. not good.
so say i send a message from x@x.com, to myself, x@x.com. the message in my sent folder looks fine; the from header says x@x.com. but when i look at the received message, the from isn’t x@x.com it’s xxx@virginmedia.com.
> For the non-ISP email address, do you need to send that via Virgin’s SMTP?
i do have access to another hosting account which does have an outgoing email server so i suppose i could use that. i have to sort this problem out for two other people as well but i suppose they could also use the other hosting account server. virgin’s smtp would be preferable, but if it proves impossible that’s that.

it’s a domain attached to a hosting account, not actually mine but i have access to. the hosting company gives the incoming server details and says outgoing is isp dependant. so it seems they provide incoming but not outgoing. ah, i’ve just looked at their site. smtp is an extra, or comes with better hosting accounts.
> What software are you using? Outlook? Thunderbird?
apple’s mail app.
is it possible virgin are forcing/mofifying the from address to be from the isp account holder’s address on purpose? is that something an isp might do? basically making it so you can only use their smtp server for the email address(es) they’ve provided and no other? i’ve emailed their support but i just don’t hold out any hope for dealing with those kinds of companies, but you never know.
just in case someone else comes across this problem: log into your webmail, click accounts, in ‘send mail as’ click ‘add another email address you own’ then take it from there. so you’ve got to add names and emails before it’ll allow you to send properly from those addresses.
