Hello everyone, i’m new to the forum! I plan on becoming involved in this amazing learning community, as the wealth of knowledge here is just ridiculous. This is the first time I really find myself signing up for a forum and actually wanting to stick with it. I’m a current student at University of Michigan. I have my 2 years prerequisites in and haven’t really taken any programming classes. However, I have taught myself HTML and CSS, those were easy to learn. I also have some experience with a few Adobe products( fireworks, dreamweaver, illustrator ). I really want to further my education in website design, so I wanted to ask you guys what I should pursue teaching myself next. Should I get into PHP ( and MySQL ) first or JavaScript? Reason why I ask is because I know those are much more complicated then HTML or CSS, and I would like to know your opinions. My goals are being able to broaden my abilities and give more functionality to any website I decide to build and learn a skill I could use in a job/career.
Welcome to the SP forums.
To complete your “client side” skill set, I would learn javascript first. And then, if you want to, you could dive into the server side world.
Hi there! I’m new t… Oh no, I just remembered that I’m not new! As a matter of fact, I’m a bit old and I alredy have memory lags
I think that since you already know CSS and HTML, you should go for Javascript. My reasos are the following
1.- It is an easy programming language to learn
2.- You can see the results immediately in your browser and that always gives you an extra to go and try something more complicated
Once you get the hang of programming (even if the functions and the syntax may differ from language to language) you may want to expand your frontiers a bit (expanding your frontiers… I don’t know why but this makes think about Star Trek or something like this  )
