Need SEO advice for large dynamic site - please view my site

Greetings everyone,

My partner suggested that I come here to get some SEO advice for my site. I do know a lot about SEO but I am a little rusty with large dynamic sites like this.

There are a few things I want to ask about. I know about the canonical links but I am not sure if I am implementing it correctly for the right reasons.

Check out my homepage for instance. I have an auction, Buy-it-now, wishlist and personal collection tabs showing a list of each product. There is also an option to display 25, 50, 100 or 200 items at one time and a way to sort through the list by lowest or highest price, recent or oldest additions and etc… You can also view page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,… and so on through a large list that is updated frequently. Much of it would be displaying the same items but in a different way (except for an item in auction compared to a different item in the wishlist tab).

So on the home page, I set all of these pages to be canonicalized to the homepage (http://www.mydomain.com/) as you can see in the source code.

The second issue I have is that I used a mod_rewrite to rewrite the URLs for much of my main pages such as: http://www.mydomain.com/coins/nickels/buffalo/. But, if someone on that page clicks (view 200 pages at one time), it goes to this URL: http://www.mydomain.com/type.php?demurl=nickels&typeurl=buffalo&displaypages=200 and everything is canocicalized on that page to the first URL (http://www.mydomain.com/coins/nickels/buffalo/)

I would like to get a lot of SEO strength for “Buffalo Nickels” in this example, but at the same time, I would like search engines to index all the items people are listing in the different tabs without getting duplicate content.

Again, please let me know if I’m doing something wrong and what I should be doing. I would greatly appreciate the help on this one.

Thanks
Kind regards

One more thing I noticed was that during the first two weeks of our launch was that Google was showing about 15,000 pages when I did the ( site:www.mysite.com ) function and there was abut 50 pages of results to browse through

Now it is only showing 115 pages and only 6 pages to browse through. After all those pages dropped, I implemented the canonical stuff.

I launched the site on August 6th, 2010

Have you spotted anything else wrong with the site? You also think the canonicalisation for all of the situations I mentioned is correct?

The reason I am concerned is because I’m getting almost 0 visitors from any search engine, yet I have a nice collection of good links being built up.

Also, Google is only indexing and ranking my individual items pages that members are creating for auctions: ( www.MYDOMAIN.com/item/948/ for example), it’s not indexing my major pages like the buffalo nickel main page: ( http://www.mydomain.com/coins/nickels/buffalo/ )

In terms of the canonicalisation, that looks pretty sound. The point is to direct visitors to the most appropriate version of the page, which for this kind of dynamic site is likely to be the first page of results for each search.

Getting indexed takes time. Being a auction site might take a little longer because google might just want to see that the links are coming in regularly. Just keep building links and make sure you are building links to inner pages.
