If you’re new to SEO, then I highly recommend you start with Google’s “Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide”. This will give you a good grounding in the right techniques to use.
After that, forget about trying to build links yourself. Links which you place yourself are of very little worth in the view of search engines. What they are looking for is links from other sites which have chosen to link to yours because of your great content. So the most important thing to work on is content.
This video by Matt Cutts gives some ways to encourage others to link to your site. It might help give you some ideas.
