For my semester project as a Front-end developer i have designed and developed a webpage for a Fictional client. The client is a Science museum, target audience is families with young children 7-15.
I need some feedback on the Design, does it meet target audience?
Is it user friendly, other improvements i can make on the design? Colors and typography.
Overall, this is a very nice website, but I do have a few suggestions.
When you target families with young children 7 - 15, you are really targeting the children ages 7 - 15. I got the impression that this website is a bit serious and sombre for that age group - too much grey and black. I would love to see something a bit more lively (but not cartoonish or childish). Maybe brighten up the colour scheme a bit.
Also, it is important to pay attention to details. The parents, looking through this website for a museum whose intention is educating the young on science, will not be encouraged to visit the museum if there are typos (Discover our Exhibitons) instead of Exhibitions, or alignment issues. For example, the icons in the navigation menu are touching the words,so they seem crowded. Give them a bit of space by adding some padding between the icons and the words. On the home page, the images for the three news items are not the same size, so they just feel off. On the Visit page, the H3 heading “Location” has some top padding that makes it sit lower than the right-hand column, which also distracts from the message.
A third thing that you might want to consider is consistency. Anything that is not consistent will tend to create a less than comfortable experience for the user. For example, on the home page, there are three buttons (Visit our Exhibitions, Visit Us, and Support US) which are all styled differently. Try to keep common elements looking the same so that the user is not left guessing as to the purpose of the elements.
The site is targeting the Parents, so therefor i went with a blue color for gaining trust.
I added some interesting pictures to appeal more to the younger generation.
I also added a form to give the site some more purpose.
You really need to go back and proofread your content very carefully. Here is another large heading on the home page: “Explore togheter.” And there are several others throughout the website.
I had a look at the original version of your site, and I think the blue is a big improvement on the previous grey and black colour scheme. I also like the “Skip to content” link in your navigation for keyboard users. Not many sites think about that.
I agree with @WebMachine; you need a little space between the icon and the word.
One thing I found odd was your use of columns for text. While it’s quite normal in print to read to the bottom of a column of text, then return to the top of the next column, it’s not common practice on the Internet, and I found it quite uncomfortable and awkward on your “Exhibitions” page.
On the home page, it’s easier to cope with the columns as they are very short in length, but I found it a little confusing visually, as “Explore together” and “Explore the wonders of our cosmos” are each one paragraph spread over two columns, but “Visit” and “Support” are two separate items side by side. As WebMachine mentioned, inconsistencies can be disorientating for visitors.
The contact form at the end of the home page seems a little strange, like an afterthought. It might be better to have a “Contact Us” page with the form, and a map of the location, postal address, etc. The newsletter sign-up box is oddly-positioned in the form, I feel, and would be better after the message. That would also help resolve the current problem where the text on that line runs together and it is unclear what it refers to.
I’m handing this in Tomorrow and have to write a report as well, so i wont have time to implement and test any layout changes right now. Have learned alot during the project, and will bring this with me onto the next project.
The project is good and improvements you can add is making the hover writing more clearer, make the favicon stand out more (not very clear), you should make the logo a hyper-link to the home page.
