I have been told by my web developer that this is going to cost £500.

Setting a blog is good idea of campaigning. This would help you to get links and come in eyes of Google as it would always provide fresh content to Google.

Dear first i want to tell u that if u create a blog than it will be a free of any cost.
And the second thing is that if u want your choice of domian name than it will cost you.Depends on the domain service provider how much it cost you 4r the domain.

Magento. Its the harder e-com cms to learn but has anything you need for e-com. Many, many successful sites use Magento. There are others out there but I have been sold on Mage myself for a long time.

If you cannot install a blog platform, plugins, and create/tweak a theme yourself, yes, this is about right.
