Mysql start problems

I don’t think i’ve made any chances to a local debian sarge server with mysql
4. I tried restarting it

/etc/init.d/mysql restart

but got this error…

Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld.
Starting MySQL database server: mysqld…failed.
Please take a look at the syslog.
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at ‘localhost’ failed
error: ‘Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket
‘/var/run/mysqld/mysq
ld.sock’ (2)’
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket:

exists!

UPDATE:
In the syslog I found this:

Anyone any ideas?

have you tried looking at the mysql log?

I’ve looked at it but doesn’t seem to be anything unusual to me:

                  60252 Query       SELECT USER()
60252 Query SELECT COUNT(*) FROM mysql.user
                  60252 Query SELECT Create_priv, Reload_priv FROM mysql.user WHERE User = 'root' OR User = ''
                  60252 Query SHOW MASTER LOGS
                  60252 Quit
060424 12:28:54 60254 Connect debian-sys-maint@localhost on
                  60254 Quit
                  60255 Connect debian-sys-maint@localhost on
60255 Query SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'pid_file'
                  60255 Shutdown

that’s the query log. i’m talking about the error log: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/error-log.html

I sorted it… I had this line in my my.cnf file i forgot about

bind-address= my ip address

I took this out and it started fine…
