My Hosting Acct and Google

Hey guys was looking for some quick info. I currently have a hosting server sert up, and I have about 5-10 other sites running off this same hosting acct. My main site is a wordpress install and everything is basically in my main hosting folder.

In that folder, there are otehr tfolders which house other web sites.

When google checks my site, are the other folders in there messing something up? Do I need to have a robots.txt file with all of those other folders marked so google isnt crawling them?

ALso, Im about to go and do some seo work for a client, they have a folder in my main hosting server, will I have to set up a robots.txt in their folder so google hits it?

Also, is this typically how designers with a lot of clients handle hosting? They have their hosting acct and they put clients within folders. Is this something I should stop doing now and set it up differently?

ANy guidence would be great guys thanks!

When you say other sites, do they have their own domain? When I ftp into my site, example.com I see
example.com
blog.example.com
chid.example.com
Google sees each one unless I have an robots file in each domain.

yes, for basically what Im concerned about, everyone has their own domain, so I have one client libuilders.com, they have a folder in my main folder and they have their own doman. I do have a few folders set up just to “see what stuff looks like, etc” but there is no domain to them and they are disposable, I could delete them now with no worries. Im mostly concerned with how the folders set up will interact with SEO on my own site

Do you set up subdomans client543.exmple.com or do you set up directories under example.com (example.com/client543) for the “see what it looks like”. I would tell bots to stay out of both via robots.txt, and try not to 1- link to them from your site 2- add them to your sitemap.

I have the clients set up at client.myname.com but all theya re is folders in the main folder of my server. some of the folders are just that, foldes, with no meaning really. Like if im working on a site and I want to put it somewhee ill throw it in a folder on my server, etc. Is this harmful in any way? should I ad all my clients to the robots.txt?

I believe google bots are working with links. If there is no link between folders they will not touch them at all.

ahhh ok, thanks. My last question: I have done freelance work for ad agencies, etc and some of he work I have done, isnt mine, like I might only have 1 or 2 pages of html/css work that I did, adn Im just taking those pages, putt9ig them on my server and liniking to them from my portfolio as opposed to linking the actual site. My thinking is that I did work for like a DVD release site, after 6 moths, they are going to go back tothe regular site and my portion would be gone, so I just put it on my server.

is this ok, or should I not do stuff like this. My thing is that I never really “learned” how o properly manage a server. I just elarned web design and to a certain extent used my server as a virtual harddrive of sorts. As I am beginning to get more work, I want to make sure I am setting myself up for success and doing things properly

I think that is ok in terms of “this is the actual code I wrote” vs just a picture. I would contact the film studio and FYI them, and put a copy of their “I am fine with you having an archived copy” letter in safe keeping just in case.
