Music a mistake on Flash Website?

Would it be a big mistake to put Jazz music on my Flash website if it fits the theme? I would have an on/off audio toggle button.

In my opinion, it is a mistake to have autoplay music on any website, period. Taking myself as an example, I browse through search results looking for anything that seems useful. When I find something, I center click to put it in a new, inactive tab. When I have ten or so such tabs open and one of them starts singing to me, I have to stop what I’m doing and sort through all ten tabs to find out which one it is. Once I identify the culprit, I’m not in much of a mood to stay on that site.

FWIW - just one person’s opinion

I personally like websites that play music, as long as I get the option to turn it off. Not sure what everyone else thinks, but that’s my opinion

My speakers are off unless I want to listen to something so I would not hear it. But then again I would be downloading something I do not need or want.

I had a client a while back who insisted they wanted music on their site. I did a lot of research at the time, and the overwhelming view seemed to be that if music is included, it should be opt-in, not opt-out. In other words, don’t auto-play, but allow the visitor to turn it on if they wish.

Yep, I second what TechnoBear said. You can have music, but please, please, please, do not have it on by default. Instead, let the user decide whether he wants to hear it or not. It’s never a good idea to force ads, music, popups on a user unless they’ve actively opted to accepting them.

I agree with allowing users to play the music. I hate when something starts playing out of no where.

Yup, same for me too.

I hate when a site starts playing music and I usually seek out and close its tab right away!

I think it is fine to have music on your website as long as…

a) the user can choose if he wants to listen to it or not
b) it is not on by default. The reason being that the noise may be annoying… even more if he’s at the office (either because he’s doing something that he shouldn’t be doing or simply because it will distract his colleagues in the same room)

Actually I like it to have the music.

Gonna chime in also. I do not like it when sites are set to auto play music or videos.
