Hi, i’m a novice when it comes to these tags. I find myself adding sometimes 2 or 3 h3 tags to my content. I think my content is as relevant as my other content so I duplicate these tags. What is the overall effect of multiple tags, and is it possible to go even further with h4 tags?
It is ok to duplicate h2 and h3 tags on a page, but you want to only use a single h1 tag.
Think of your webpage as a term paper, the h1 would be the title of the paper so you would only have 1 of them, and the h2 and h3 tags would be sub titles or sub headings throughout the paper distinguishing new sections. So it is ok to use multiple h2 and h3 tags to break up your page and the different sections.
Just make sure you do not abuse the tags and stuff lots of keywords in there.
As much as possible keep unique content in your site. You can highlight important title and sub-headings using the header tag. H1 can be used in title and should be used only once in each page. For component level heading you can use h2. h2,h3 header tags are commonly used to highlight the secondary keywords.
Yes you can also go further with h4. But your keywords should not be repeated.
Use your primary and generic keywords in H1 tags and secondary in H2 and H3 tags and yes you can use H4 tags also if you feel they are required.
To add something hard to the fluff, I would say that it really shouldn’t matter!
Your h1 heading tag is for the title of your page, and those underneath it are for headings underneath that. If you’re writing a document in Word then you would always add headings and when you want to split content up you would use headings within those sections. It’s the exact same principle.
Thank you EVERYONE for the advice. It’s great to get tips where EVERYONE agrees on the right answer.
B371, could you please elaborate… the more info I get, the better. thx
I won’t say that what blogger371 said was incorrect, but it’s not important enough to worry about.
The most important thing to worry about is whether your contnet is well-formed. That means adding headings where appropriate for the user. The general rule is that h1 matters as it outlines the title of the page, and the rest of the headers outline the semantics of the content below it.
In short, write as if you’re writing any other document. If you have a large chunk of text add a heading to split it up and to give your content more meaning.
Thank you ULTIMATE. So basically just like mentioned before…style it just like I would a term paper. Use appropriate paragraph breaks and use headers for the important paragraph breaks.
