Mockup Design speed - Are you fast or slow?

[FONT=“Georgia”][SIZE=“3”]Hi folks,
I normally use Adobe fireworks.

How many hours does it take you
(normally) to design ONLY the home page design for lets say:

A content heavy magazine type blog site with e-commerce

Thanks in advance

I completely go with this. It really does depend on how much is involved so it’s kind of impossible to say because some can have more or less than the required, you need to find out every inch of information before you can go ahead with creating the design within the planning area. It can take several days to weeks for it to be completed fully.

I completely agree with you Ralph and what other members in this thread have said, but I really think Phil specifically meant designing the mock-up, after everything in the design process is already established and hashed out. So, we’re talking about being ready to sit down and open up your application of choice and design the first initial mock-up.

And for that, it usually takes me around 1 hour and I mock-up designs with HTML and CSS. If it’s actual Adobe Photoshop graphical design and editing work then for me, for this particular scenario I’m probably looking at 1 day (not literally 24 hours though) because I’m terrible in Adobe Photoshop.

And if I’m wrong, and what you’re talking about Ralph, is what Phil meant, then yes, it takes me much longer than that and it would be dependent on a few variables.

Usually, after an initial discussion with a client, there’s a period of a week or two while I wait for them to decide whether to proceed. That gives me plenty of time just to mull things over in idle moments, so by the time we’re ready to start work I have a good idea of layout, style, etc. After that, it doesn’t take long to refine things.

It depends on what you include in the process. I find it takes many hours to hash out with the client what the site is for, what kind of content it will present, where that content should appear, what functionality is required etc.

After that, it should be reasonably easy to wireframe the home page. When the client likes the layout of content, adding styles is not too hard.

These days I use InDesign for the wireframe (it’s much more flexible than Ps, Ai or Fw IMHO), but the actual styled design in done in the browser.
