Mobile site indexed 404

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

We have a m. version of my website and we had a few issues which meant it wasnt visible for google to render which has led to google indexing 404 to the majority of pages. So for example if you search ski weekends in the serp you get the correct page title, descriptions but the url is All the errors have been fixed and if you type the exact url you get the correct pages.

We have the correct coanical, robots.txt and sitemap submitted. We are not in a position to make a responsive site so i really need to get it sorted.

Would it be best to remove the 404 url from the listing and cache the url removal? My worry is this will loose all of the listings in the serp. I tested this a couple of days ago and the 404 still works correctly as it should but it meant we had no listings.
I have asked the developer to add

<meta name="robots" content="noindex"/>

to the 404 page aswell.

Any advice would be great.
