Missing Control Panel Items

Hi All

I have Googled and tinkered as best I can but now I must turn to the pros for the solution.
I am on XP Pro, and if I go to the control panel I have Administrative Tools, but if I click on that I don’t get Computer management.

I can do it via Run –> MMC

But that’s not the point, I want it how it used to be.
I recently had that Windows Restore virus which I have got rid of, probably that’s what screwd this up, and what I would like to do is reset that entire control Panel without having to reinstall Windows.
Any ideas?

I just had a client machine in with the XP Restore virus, I ended up having to reinstall windows. The virus marked every file on the computer hidden. You can see hidden files from a dos prompt using the ATTRIB command, or change your Explorer view settings to show hidden and system files if you suspect something similar on your machine.

I think you should try system restore operation for solving this problem. Please click on start menu then go to programs then accessories then system tools then click on system restore then click next then on the list select your appropriate restore point date then click next again next then ok. I think in this way you can solve your problem without installing operating system.

Hi Doug

It did indeed mark all my files as hidden, but I have unhidden them.
I don’t want to reinstall Windows if I can help it.

For the specific applet you mentioned, check and see if you have compmgmt.msc in your \windows\system32 directory. If so you should be able to add computer management back into the administrative tools panel.

Thanks Doug, I don’t have a panel, just shortcuts in Administrative tools, but I have copied that file over and I can live with that.
