Min-width on a table column not working in at least ff2

hello,

a td of a table set to a particular width works fine – the column goes to that width (in at least safari and firefox). a td of a table set to a particular min-width works fine in safari but not in firefox. how come width works ok but min-width doesn’t, bearing in mind firefox is ok with min-width in other situations?, and more importantly, how to get min-width of a table column to work in ff?

thanks.

#w { width:100px; }       << with this the width works
#w { min-width:100px; }   << with this the width doesn't work in ff

<table border="1">
	<tr>
		<td>1</td>
		<td id="w">2</td>
		<td>3</td>
		<td>4</td>
	</tr>
	<tr>
		<td>1</td>
		<td>2</td>
		<td>3</td>
		<td>4</td>
	</tr>
</table>

To my knowledge, min-width is not a property of col/td/th. See CSS 2.1, §17.3 Columns.

The ‘width’ property gives the minimum width for the column.
Setting width is equivalent to setting min-width, as a table cell must always enclose its content, and the row of cells must always fill the table’s width.
