META TAG Data Help Please!

Iv just created a website using CoffeeCup HTML Editer, but this is the first website which i have created using a HTML Editer instead of a sitebuilder provided by the hosting. In the sitebuilder i used for my old site, it provided what was called"SEO Wizard" which wrote the meta tags in the head for me.

Now im using this HTML Editer, i have to write it myself… On the template i used to start off, it provided a start for me to enter the rest. My <head> so far looks like thefollowing…

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset=“utf-8”>
<meta name=“Description” content=“Your Title”>
<meta name=“author” content=“CoffeeCup Software, Inc.”>
<meta name=“Copyright” content=“Copyright (c) 2010 CoffeeCup, all rights reserved.”>
<title>Your Title</title>
<link rel=“stylesheet” href=“CSS/Website Design.css”>
</head>

I can see myself that i need to add some sort of meta tag line for my “Keywords”.
Im also not sure if there is any other lines i need to add, or remove if needed.
Could someone help me please? Thanks!

Note: Im not asking someone to add my specific keywords, descriptions, etc… for me. Im just looking for help on how to write each line it & then i can fill in the “Specific Stuff” for my site.

You don’t need to add a keywords entry unless you need them for something. The search engines ignore that one so most sites no longer use it.

The description is used by some search engines as the text to display with the title in the search results. Other search engines generate their own description from the actual page content.

The author and copyright entries are basically only comments about what software created the page and when.

If i am targeting keywords such as in backlinks, etc… Do they not also need to be in the <head> then?

Will i just delete the line which says…
<meta name=“Copyright” content=“Copyright (c) 2010 CoffeeCup, all rights reserved.”>

What about auther?

You don’t target keywords in meta data, you create content that legitimately uses them, format it with a good html structure and gather legitimate links from other sites in the topic.

The only search engine relevant meta tag is description which is used for display back.

There are other, new meta tags, to provide different types of data for more advanced features with site compatibility [i.e. that one that says utf-8], mobile display, even facebook but that’s not about search and not required.

Any meta tags you do add [which would likely be very few for you] go between <head> and </head>

I target keywords by using them as the Ancher Text in links i built pointing to my website. I just thought i had to add them into <head> of my page too.

Nope. Either the keywords are well used in your content or they don’t exist.

And FYI, be careful about how you secure backlinks. Getting your link placed on other people’s sites, in a blog comment or such is just fine [although the utility of each is debatable] while actually “building” something you own to point to something else you own is a blackhat tactic and a good way to get a ban.

No im talking about backlinks on forums, blogs, etc…

Those are not worth much because the content of the blog or forum page is usually not closely enough related to what your page is about for the link to carry much value.

It is rumoured that some minor search engines still use the keyword meta tag.

I use the keyword meta tag mainly as a note to myself, which keywords that page is focussed on. They also are in header tags, but I like a quick reference in the source code.

<title>Earn Top Quality Gadgets Online</title>
<meta charset=“utf-8”>
<meta name=“description” content=“Find out how to earn top of the range gadgets & games consoles online. Also get help while your earning your free gadgets”>
<meta name=“keywords” content=“free gadgets, free games consoles, gadgets”>
<meta name=“author” content=“CoffeeCup Software, Inc.”>
<meta name=“alexaVerifyID” content=“B_dhX9HcLoIQjpKEw-sQH1GbQpA” />
<link rel=“stylesheet” href=“CSS/Website Design.css”>

The above is what my meta-tag part of my <head> of my page now looks like.
Is there anything that should be in it that isn’t? or is there some not in it that should be?

Your title should be of maximum 60 characters and description should be of 120 characters. These lengths are considered as the best optimized lengths which most of the search engines expect.

My title is only 30 characters and my decription is exactly 120 characters.:stuck_out_tongue:

If minor SEs use keywords also no use bcz will not deliver any traffic… Meta keyword also useful for big sites (CMS) index searching in widows hosting … can configure IIS to cache meta keywords and display same like Google result
