Making sense of Register.com search engine reminder

I received the attached e-mail from register.com that recommends I submit my website to major search engines and internet directories to:

• Google™
• Google Places™
• Google Mobile™
• Bing™
• Yahoo!®
• Twitter®
• Facebook®
• CitySearch®
• Foursquare™
YP.com
• GPS navigation
• MerchantCircle®

But this raises a lot of questions for me:

  1. google/yahoo/bing automatically crawl websites so whats the benefit of submitting them? isnt submitting to search engines an antiquated excersize?

  2. this business i have is a service (HVAC type stuff) and not a brick and mortar so no reason to submit to Google Places/CitySearch/Foursquare, right?

  3. Twitter and Facebook dont have submissions places… as far as I know. You just create an account on them… right?

  4. We dont have a mobile version of the site. Even if we did, where is there a Google Mobile site submission? Dont the spiders just figure it out for themselves?

  5. Anything else, big picture, that I’m missing and should take away from this???

Honestly, it’s not something I do, or would pay to have done.

They’re just trying to drum up some business.

Also, I would highly recommend moving away from register.com–their prices are ridiculous when compared to other registrars like godaddy, namecheap, and 1&1.
