Learning to build a dynamic website using wordpress

I am learning various aspects of web designing with the help of Sitepoint books, the Sitepoint forums and a few other internet sources. So far, I have built a personal site using a bit of photoshop, html, css, php and mysql. I then wanted to learn something about wordpress blogging. I downloaded and installed wordpress and have made a self hosted blog in a subfolder of my website (ie my blog can be accessed at mywebsite.com/blog). This is in the form of a blog.

Now, I want to try and learn how to make a website with the help of wordpress. Is it possible to make a site similar to my personal site (I mean a site where I can have different pages and also a gallery page where the client can upload, edit or delete images and a contact page where the client can invite comments from the reader) exclusively with the help of wordpress?

I have a domain name and am using the services of a webhost. Since the wordpress blog was mainly for learning purpose, I downloaded and installed it in a subfolder on my site instead of having a separate domain name and account for it. Can I do the same when I want to try and learn how to make a website (not a blog) with the help of wordpress? For this, do I need to download and install wordpress again with a different username and password and do the whole process similar to what I did earlier?

Wordpress is not only a blog platform, it also works great as a cms.
You can have different pages, gallery page, insert contact form, etc.
I think you should work with wordpress locally on your computer first for example using xampp.

Thanks. I already have WAMP installed on my computer which I used for testing my personal site locally before uploading it. But in the case of the wordpress blog, I directly tested it online.
If I need to test the wordpress site locally, do I need to download and install wordpress once again and give another username and password?

One newbie question, since I already have the extracted wordpress files on my computer, can I copy the same onto another folder, create a database and make the changes accordingly in the wp-config.php file?

You can test locally both your static and dynamic sites.
I’m sure you will find a good instruction how to install wordpress locally on wamp and how to have locally the same copy of wordpress that you have online.
According to changing wp-config.php file you will have to export sql database of your wordpress that works online and import it locally.
But I’m sure you will find great instructions in google for this.

snecz, I have tested my static and dynamic sites locally on wamp earlier and also know how to change the wp-config.php file since I have already done it once. I just wanted to know if I can use the same wordpress files which I had been using online for local testing of another site too.
I understand from your reply that I can use the same wordpress files. ie I do not need to download and install wordpress again. Am I right?

I hope this time I understood you correctly.
In xampp you have to install wordpress and set database for every new site you create. So if you want leave the previous site – data and layout you have to install new copy of wordpress.

Thanks a lot. Yes, I do want to leave the earlier site (the blog) as it is and try to build a new site for which I understand that I need to download and install a new copy of wordpress once again. I hope I am right.

Yes. That’s right.
