K Yank's Build Your Own Database Driven Website (4th Ed): MySQL Installation help

Hi, all,

I’m a complete MySQL Newbie working through Kevin Yank’s Build Your Own Database Driven Website (4th Edition), and I have hit a complete brick wall on page 44 and need some help.

I’ve never used Terminal before and I’ve searched the Forum/web for answers, but I’m clearly out of my depth and don’t want to leave a trail of destruction in my wake!

I’m working on an iMac running OSX 10.6.8 and am attempting to install PHP and MySQL, as described in Chapter 1: Installation.

I have apparently successfully installed both items, and MySQL seems to be running according to my System Preferences, which list it under “Other”.

I am now on page 44 of the book, followed the “Post-Installation Set-up Tasks” directions to type

mysqladmin -u root status

into Terminal. When I do this, I get the response

-bash: mysqladmin: command not found

All the advice on how to proceed that I have found on other sites is completely over my poor Newbie head, and I don’t want to be blindly poking around and potentially making things worse. Any guidance would be very gratefully received!
