I just bought a 4 letter .TV domain name. I feel as if I have made the right decision especially since my entire business will be revolved around a TV show, videos, and HD content, but others seem to disagree because of these facts:
#1 - The island of tuvalu isa sinking. However, I did read this article that says .TV domain names will be safe, regardless of the fact that the island is sinking. Here is the article: USATODAY.com - Tuvalu’s sinking, but its domain is on solid ground What do you think? Is it really safe to use .TV when the island is sinking like this?
#2 - Is .tv recognized as a TLD on google? I have heard two different opinions on this…
#3 - Can .tv eventually be sold by Verisign and used by someone else? Could this cause major problems down the road?
As a backup, I have secured a 6 letter .com domain name with “TV” in it…like this: NAMETV.com
So, in the end, I find myself going back and forth wondering: should I use my 4 letter .tv domain name (which is very easy to remember) or should I use my 6 letter .com domain name (which is harder to remember).
Well since it is their domain if the island were to actually sink completely then there’d be no country to own that domain any more and so as a country specific TLD it would have no further reason to exist.
Of course the people of that country will not go down with their country if it does sink and will presumably be given somewhere else to set up and so the country would continue to exist even though the island of Tuvala might sink. Tose people would still own .tv even if the island it is named for goes under.
Of course they could decide before the island sinks to use the entire TLD to run a campaign to save their country in which case no one who currently leases a .tv name from them would be able to renew their domain.
I would say stick with the .tv domain. Sounds perfect for what you are doing. Domain names are not physically tied to a country, so won’t be pulled under the waves with it! (Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to poor Tuvalu, though. )
Go with the .tv. I quite like .tv names, for instance I have DiscountCode.tv. I think it’s a great name and works well for marketing. The only thing I have against them is higher than average renewal fees, so don’t reg too many.
I suppose that is good investment you have made in your business. Latter or sooner that give you some benefits.
In any case having several domain names associated with your business - that is very good idea.
.tv is a good choice. It is fits your web site’s general description well and is relatively easy to remember. A .com might have been killer but you can always register that later.
