Ok basically I have just purchased my first domain name and hosting account to start getting stuff online… For my course I need to upload my next project anyway so i chose a domain name that I will be able to use for a couple of years for a blog or whatever also… What I am wondering though, is if I install wordpress on this domain, and have a subfolder say “coursework”, will http://www.mydomain.co.uk/coursework/ still be visible if wordpress is installed in the public_html folder? Might be a stupid question im not sure lol
Yes, it certainly will be ‘visible’ … or visitable. Of course, people are not likely to find it unless there is a link to it somewhere on the web. If you don’t want people to see it (unless you specifically provide a link) then you’ll be pretty safe. And if it needs to stay hidden, you could password protect it.
thanks its not really a case of people needing to see it other than tutors so i dont need to provide a link or whatever and it doesnt necessarily need to be password protected either, was jsut wondering for when im presenting my project if i can navigate to that url, wasnt sure if having wordpress installed was going to affect anything as a friend mentioned he wasnt sure as wordpress creates some sort of a url structure or something. thanks
No, it’s fine to do that. You can have as many folders outside WordPress as you like. [Perhaps just avoid calling any of your WP pages something like “coulsework”, though, just to be on the safe side. ]
ok thx but i just install wordpress into the public_html folder as normal and also have my “coursework” folder in the public_html folder also and all will be well?
Yep.
I confirm it will work out just fine. As long as you type out the address right, it will work.
I have a client who I have made a directory called “jmichaels” for and he installed a blog so his entire address for the blog is:
Why didn’t you just put his blog at http://www.mysite.com/blog … assuming that this is his site and not yours? (And if it is your site, why are you putting his blog on your site?)
