JQUERY: get a reference to newly added element as soon as it is appended

I have this HTML

	<ul id="my-list">
    	<li>item 1</li>
        <li>item 2</li>
        <li>item 3</li>
        <li>item 4</li>
	</ul>

    <ul id="my-list2">
    	<li>item 1</li>
        <li>item 2</li>
        <li>item 3</li>
        <li>item 4</li>
	</ul>

I have my JQuery code like this:

$(document).ready(function()
{
	// $list1 = $('#my-list li:eq(1)');
	// $list1.siblings().css('color', 'red');
	$ul1 = $('#my-list');
	$ul1.append('<li>this is new list item</li>');

});

my question is how can I get a reference to the newly added list item

i tried something like:

$newList = $ul1.append('<li>this is new list item</li>');

but it does not return as I expected.

I found this answer
jQuery(‘:last-child’, $newLi).css(‘color’,‘red’);
