Job Prospects

Hello,

I’m a front end web developer and looking to further my career. I was just wondering what would be more beneficial for job prospects. I’ve done research and I’ve seen mixed responses, and I know this is probably address a lot. But what is the thinking of learning jQuery vs learning straight javascript? I’m aware that people say that jQuery is easier to learn etc, but from a view of the industry as it is now, and the average job application as a web developer, what would be the better choice?

Also what type of time frame would you put on really getting to grips with jQuery / javascript

Thank you in advance,

Dan

Speaking from experience, if you take the time to learn the basics of JavaScript first, you’ll stand considerably less chance of shooting yourself in the foot at a later date.
Don’t get me wrong, I love jQuery, but it is only a library and understanding the language it is written in is vital.

As for how long it will take to really get to grips with JS, that depends on what kind of learner you are and what you mean by “really get to grips”.

I would recommend this as a good starting point: JavaScript Programming for the Web
