iPhone 4 vs HTC Evo 4G. I’m still on my iPhone 3G. For X-mas I’ll get a new one. In all likelyhood I’ll be getting the iPhone 4. But the HTC Evo is a very nice phone. There are some other nice smart phones on the market, but nobody really comes close to these to beasts. Which one are you getting?
Both have 720p HD video. Evo has a 8mp camera vs iPhones 5mp. Though iPhone has a 5mp infront too vs Evo’s 1.3mp. Both have multitasking. Near future iPhone os 4 is suppossed to enable 3rd party apps to also run in the background. That’s huge and will most likely bring forth very powerful apps. I really like the Evo’s large 4.3 inch screen vs iPhones 3.5 inch. Although iPhone has much higher res. Battery life is superior on the iPhone. Though, battery is removable on the Evo. Evo has a kickstand for movie watching on it’s huge screen - that’s real cool! Google apps are more refined in the Evo. The Evo runs on Sprints 4G network (where available). 4G is ten times faster than iPhones 3G. Though I happen to think the future is city wide WiFi (someday). Both have video calling which is amazing! Evo can video call from it’s 4G or 3g networks. iPhones video calling is limited to WiFi only. Basically Apple needs to crawl into bed with another carrier. Sprint and Apple - now that’s a good marriage. In my opinion, you really can’t go wrong with either of these phones - they’re both the tops!
On a side note… I have been playing around with two hot apps recently on my iPhone. Both free ofcourse! “Knocking Video” gives you almost video calling now with older iPhones. You can both hear, but only one caller can see. The other is awesome! What’s your main gripe with iPhones Safari browser? No flash right! Not anymore! Download “Cloud Browser”. It’s a full browser like FX streamed to your phone. I’m on Wifi here at home and it work perfect. I imagine it may be a little slow on 3G.
Alex, got your iPhone4 now? Care to post some pics taken from your phone? I’d like to see how good the pics are. You think it’s good enough not to carry a separate cam?
I believe iPhone 4 much more flexibility despite the closed eco system of Apple for the developers. A quick and informative comparison is drawn here between these two phones
I don’t have the link on hand but the camera on the iPhone has been proven to produce much better pictures and video to that of the Evo. Yes the evo has more mega pixels but in this case it did not equal higher quality images or video.
That is pretty common on cameras, the photography industry has spent so much on marketing for higher mega-pixels but there’s more to good quality photos than how many of those you have. From what I’ve read, Apple have spent a lot of effort into using high quality components and while the mega-pixel count is lower, the actual quality you get from those MP’s is much higher than other devices of relative specification. I can’t wait to get my iPhone4
Not unless Adobe totally re-write the foundation of Flash. What makes HTML semantic is that it has elements which describe the type of content behind held within. In flash it’s pretty much a case of having a text element (this doesn’t describe the value of the content) thereby it’s unsemantic (without an HTML alternative).
I agree, but if Adobe finds a way to make Flash “semantic” it could remain viable. I am not a flash programmer, so I do not know if that is possible or not. Surely it is ??
Should Apple be being sued for creating the most awesome phone ever? No! But… they brought it on themselves by their reaction to the antenna problem. If instead of playing dumb (thus insulting buyers intelligence!) they apologized for the oversight and offered a free bumper then no one would be upset. Because users feel coned a little is why apple is being sued.
That said, I’ll say it again. This phone is amazing! I’m listening to Pandora as I type and flying in and out of apps via the new multitasking. Multitasking various apps like this there are so many little nuances that need to come in to play and they all work absolutely perfect! Basically I’m like a little kid in a candy store every time I pick up this phone
Acknowledging that people in general like to vote for the underdog, according to this poll, which asks “which phone wold you buy?”, htc evo leads with 61% of the votes to iphones 35%. Regardless of the features iphone packs in there, I can’t argue with evos screen size. I played with my bros phone again yesterday, and in comparison, it makes my iphone seem like old school flip phone screen once I come back to mine. I dont have to squint to see anything. iphone is just a little too small. A 4 inch screen would be perfect! I think they will do this with iphone 5 - this seems to be the trend with others like the droid incredible etc.
Battery life… the battery life on the evo is not as bad as they say. Yes, if your obsevivly playing with all the features all day long the battery will go. But if your using more normally (like holding a job while in ownership) it lasts all day.
I disagree, Flash isn’t healthy for the modern semantic web, sure Flash currently helps to serve the market… but Flash itself isn’t mission critical to distribute content (at least it shouldn’t be). People are abusing it (as a wrapper) by refusing to offer alternatives… this practice has been going on for years and those without access to Flash or those with specific needs as a result of this egotistical dependence on the medium ends up giving everyone the finger who is affected - you might say that it’s justification to give Flash to the iPad, but what about the disabled people who have to live with the technology crippling their experience? You can’t just enable Flash for them. Any designer worth their salt would not dream of producing a website entirely in Flash (with no alternatives) nor would they put a video on the web without offering a direct link to the physical file (like mp4 or mpeg or mov) in opposition to embedding it within a proprietary closed source system which just acts as another barrier to access. If web developers weren’t lazy and bothered to provide alternative methods to get the information, there would be no issue whatsoever.
I never stated that Apple were perfect nor did I say that I agreed with how they approach code. I don’t own any Apple stuff and I’ve spent years making comments about how expensive and hollow their equipment is, but on the sole occasion where I applaud Apple for the choice to refuse Flash (knowing how much it’s awakened people who refuse to provide alternative content) you think it’s fair to claim I’ve been sipping at the koolaid? I’ve no doubt that proclaiming their bloat-ware browser Safari as HTML5 safe was bad, and I’ve also no doubt that the iDevices aren’t without issues, but I have nothing but admiration for Apple’s choice to give everyone who thinks relying on a browser extension was a smart idea a firm slap in the face, it’s about time someone highlighted the damage that Flash dependence does.
Hi Alex, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m prob not the best guy to be wasting anytime on web semantics on. I really don’t care much. I stick round pegs through square holes all day long. But… It’s not really about semantics in my opinion. Yes, Apple states they care about the web BLA BLA BLA - that’s good! Although, I’m quite sure pro bodybuilders would prefer to inject vitimain C into their veins every night instead of Steroids. But until a safer drug comes out that is as powerful as Steroids (AKA Flash) they’re stuck with the only thing that can get the job done. Yes, apparently HTML5 will be very powerful, but as my link a few posts above explains, it can’t do what flash can do. So bottom line is, the web without flash is a more semantic web (i guess), yet a more bland web as well. I would be willing to bet alot on the fact that Apple will feel the pressure from these other Android enabled phones (that do have flash and start to eat away at their profits) and Apple will, in my opinion, eventually break and give the public a full web experience. And that will most likely be in the form of 3rd party apps/web browsers or plugins (that can now run in background). Apple will approve these apps as a way of “meeting in the middle”. Opera paved the way with it’s acceptance in to the itunes store. Now it’s just a matter of following their footsteps. Skyfire browser is blazing fast, fully supports flash/java/etc, and is set to enter the the apple market soon…
Eric, I think you have missed my point… I’m not saying that Flash itself is bad, what I’m saying is bad is that people are becoming dependant on it when it’s factually accurate and perfectly clear that it cannot be relied upon (Just like JavaScript). My commendation of Apple has nothing to-do with them blasting Flash as a technology… my commendation is strictly in approval of them highlighting the problem many people have been suffering (pre and post) the dependence on Flash (which the iDevices clearly showcase by refusing to allow them). If you want Flash, don’t buy an iPhone… it’s Apple’s business, let them do with it what they wish, the only websites not having Flash physically harms are those who are overly (and unjustly) dependant on them, so I say good for Apple for highlighting the plight thousands of people suffered before the iPhone existed and sticking to their guns to force developers to-do their jobs properly.
If the new IPhone is as good as my 3GS i will be over the moon,i will give it another month or so to se if any more bugs appear so how much are they new in the UK ???
I couldn’t be happier with my iPhone 4! This thing is strait from Star Trek. I’ve played with it for basically the last 24 hours strait and I see no bugs. Yes the reception does noticeably fall if you bridge the two antennas but a case solves that so no biggy. The iPhone bumpers are real nice! So I’ve played with both now - the iPhone 4 and the htc evo - the iPhone wins hands down. It’s just so much more enjoyable to play with. Everything just runs so smoothly. The evo is real nice but it seems it pieced together. The user experience is far more seamless on the iPhone. And boy is it fast. I’m pretty much done with my desk top.
ive been set on getting a blackberry for the longest time, but of course apple just had to release the iphone 4. now i’m back to choosing between them. I like having a keypad, which is why the blackberry seems ideal, but the iphone 4 is just soooo awesome!
What, like their html5 showcase that deliberately excludes competitors browsers that could quite happily display it? I think you’ve drank a bit too much Apple koolaid.
My bro got his htc evo yesterday - really nice phone. I was envious of the screen size. Funny… smart phones goal for the last five years was smaller is better. Now I think we’re going to back of that a little now with the popularity of the evo. I’ll be getting a iphone 4 on the 25th. So hopefully I like it more than my bros evo.
