Anyone here know how to do text on an image, where it looks as though it’s been punched into the image - it’s kinda opposite to emboss, emboss is for the words to be raised, but this effect, is where the text goes into the image in a transparent way, with some sort of shading around the text. Not sure what the exact name of the effect is, but can anyone point me in the right direction to find out please ?
Fully realise how vague the question seems, but I can’t seem to find the image I saw a few months ago somewhere on the net, that showed the effect
If it helps, I’ve come across something that’s very close. It’s similar to the one on the link below, BUT, the color of the text would be exactly the same as the image surrounding the text.
I believe it is called a ‘deboss’ effect or something like that; basically you use layers, for example; set the block colour then write the text and on the text layer: Select> Layer Style > Inner Shadow … or something similar to get better results, such as a inner glow, etc.
Thanks for that, and yes, I did also google for tutorials, but the image I’m looking to make, is where the text is the same color as the image surrounding it, but with some sort of slight shading.
the first example is dark grey text with the Inner Shadow layers style as mentioned above…with the blending mode set to Soft Light for that layer.
the second example uses the Bevel & Emboss layers style…set to Inner Bevel…and the blending mode set to Screen.
since you want the background image to show through the text, especially if it isn’t a solid color, the key may be to play around with the blending modes once you have a text effect (possibly one of the layer styles) you like.
Use the blending styles as described in the tutorial Dark Tranquility linked to, then copy the background image that you want to show through your text onto a new layer
Place the copied background layer above your text layer
Select your copied background layer, then create a clipping mask by pressing “option” + “cmd” + “G” or “alt” + “cmd” + “G” on the Mac
Move the background layer (clipping mask) around until it blends in 100% with your global background (this step isn’t necessary, if you have placed the copied background layer in the same position as your global background layer)
Thanks agarcia831, it’s more like the bottom one, as the text is the same color as the background, but, instead of the text looking as though it’s raised up from the image, it looks as though it’s depressed, into the image, does that make sense ? Have you, or anyone got any samples of that at all ?
hmm…a depressed effect is what I was going for in both examples.
how about this tutorial then…using lighting effects instead of layer styles. look any closer to what you want?
Does anyone know what vers of PS that is for the tut on that link please ? I’m on PS 7 and I can’t see (Layer > Type > Render Layer). anywhere ?
