I can't access my own websites!

This is a very weird situation:

  • When I try to access any of my own websites they are very slow to load. Sometimes they don’t load at all. Other times they load, but the static assets (images etc) only partially download then get stuck.
  • When I access the server via sFTP, I either get disconnected straight away or after drilling down a couple of directories.
  • I can access all websites except my own without problems.
  • My hosting company says there is no problem with the server, the FTP, or my sites.
  • Others have said they have no problems accessing the sites.
  • I can access the sites if I use a proxy.
  • Trying on different computers (but on the same connection), I cannot access the sites.

I can only think the problem could be related to my IP address. My connection has a dynamic IP, so I’m guessing that I was assigned a new IP a bit less than a week ago (when the problems started). But I still can’t see how that could result in the behaviour I’m seeing. If my IP was blocked by the server’s firewall, why would it allow downloading of partial content? (I’ve tried clearing cache, cookies, etc. so the partial content isn’t cached content).

I’m really at a loss as to what the problem is, and I need to be able to access my websites to update them, respond to comments, etc. Does anyone have any ideas at all about what the issue could be?

Could You specify how your sites are hosted? If they are hosted on your local computer a change of IP address can affect it. Check first if your site is reachable through www.websitedown.info

The sites are hosted on a standard shared web server, not locally. As I said in my question, I could even access the sites when I used a proxy, so I knew the sites were up.

Thankfully the issue resolved itself (likely my connection was assigned a new IP that fixed the issue).

My webhost gave the following advice, which may be useful if anyone else with the same issue comes across this post in the future:

It is possible you had latency on one of the hops between you and us, if the issue happens again use the mtr/pathping command to check that there is no packets being lost between you and us.
