I am VERY new to web design and development, and want to make WordPress child themes

Hi guys. Thanks for taking the time to stop by my thread.

I recently bought the “Build Your Own Wicked WordPress Themes” book.

The information in it was plentiful, however I don’t feel like it guided me thoroughly through the process of turning the Thematic WordPress theme into something stunning. Does anyone have any other sources or books I can buy that you guide me from step one and beyond in terms of creating child themes that I will be able to sell?

Also, how do I go about practicing my skills?

Thanks so much everyone. All your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi drichards2013. Welcome to SitePoint.

The WordPress book assumed background knowledge like HTML and CSS, so it’s important to learn those first. SitePoint has some good books on this, such as Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS, 2nd Edition.

Hi Ralph. Thanks for answering me. I actually do have a nice CSS and HTML background. I have the book you suggested as well. Should I start over, reset my knowledge? Am I going too fast? How long does it usually take for one to go from no knowledge of web language to being able to run a business from home?

I started in December 2010.

All I can say is just to keep plugging away, studying and practicing. I don’t see the need to reset, as such. If you have questions, feel free to post them here!

How exactly does one practice? Making fake websites for myself?

Yep! Or at least individual pages. Or even parts of pages. One thing I did (and still do) is peek under the hood of pages I like and see how they are built. That was how I got going (after reading a book or two). Get something like Firebu for Firefox (or use the inbuilt dev tools in Safari, Chrome or Opera to study the HTML, CSS and even JavaScript.

Thanks again. One last thing. I’m still pretty young; 16 years old. What would i have to major in in college in order to learn these things? Computer science?

try these tutorials, I find practice comes with copying examples and tutorials:
